Mom wearing her new Chico's jacket — Christmas 2007
Goodbye Mom.
After fighting cancer for six months, struggling with dementia for seven years, and living with celiac for 10, Mom left us to a better place today at 10:45am. She had slipped into a sleeping coma since Wednesday. Her constant wish was "that it was over;" that "it was taken out." On Wednesday as I sat with her at dinner, she suddenly said out of the blue, "oh, this is so hard — I have to choose between the two of them."
When Mom came back from MD Anderson, San Antonio was overcast, cold and wet. But this morning, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Hummingbirds, which we don't usually see until March, were out to celebrate the day, as well as other birds singing in the treetops. God bless my mom, and I thank Him for letting me be with her these last six wonderful months. I'll see you soon Mom — we all will. Thank you for your love and hope.
I will post details about her service in the next few days. In lieu of flowers, I ask you to consider donating to a scholarship fund in Mom's name for speech students — I will post more info in it in future postings.

for bill, dawn, and mark:
thank you so much for everything you did to keep rita's friends informed about her.
i am so thankful that rita is not suffering anymore. but otherwise, the pain that all of you and all of us who loved her are feeling is a profound wish that it all could have been different.....for her and us. losing her is a great loss for the planet......
rita, hands down, was the best teacher/friend that any of my kids had in any schooling experience X four kids X elementary, jr hi, high school, and college.
in fact, teacher is a misnomer. she was a magician. in so many ways.......
there's a lot of other feelings and thots to express....later.
rest in loved and loving peace, rita......

You and I never met, but Rita was my friend during the many years of my marriage to your cousin Don in Austin. Rita was a bright spark in the world, and waa a terrific example of humans at our best. I don't think Rita encountered much she couldn't laugh about, and her wide grin and wit are crystal clear in my mind. Don's mother, Margie, considered Rita one of her very best friends, and I know there's a laugh fest going on in heaven with those two back together. Rita was a peach, and the world is a little darker for the loss of her light.
